Medical Cannabis and Gut Inflammation: Can itHelp?

According to research, nearly 1.6 million people are living with some sort of gut inflammation in the United States, and approximately 70,000 such cases are diagnosed every year.

Considering how uncomfortable living with such conditions is, the need for a suitable treatment is more important than ever. That’s where medical marijuana comes in.

Can Medical Cannabis Treat Gut Inflammation?

Gut inflammation is a recurring condition for which a permanent cure has not been found; however, various studies have been conducted that show the remission of the condition through the use of medical marijuana.

Research was carried out at the University of Massachusetts Medical School that found that medical cannabis alleviates gut inflammation for people with Irritable Bowel Disorder (IBD), for instance.

When the human body is attacked by a pathogen or infected by a disease, a normal inflammation response occurs. To fight off the viruses or bacteria causing the disease, our immune system releases Neutrophils. This phenomenon is called Neutrophil Influx, which is a coping mechanism that protects the body against foreign microorganisms. However, an imbalance or excess of Neutrophils causes damage to the protective layer inside the intestine, resulting in inflammation.

To fight the inflammation, the human body generates a chemical known as endogenous cannabinoids, or endocannabinoids, to heal the inflammation. These endocannabinoids have the same effect as the cannabinoids found in medical cannabis.

For further evidence, experiments were performed on the cell lines of mice and humans. Scientists found that consuming medical cannabis for such inflammations made up for the lack of endocannabinoids that are naturally produced by the body.
